Once we have seen the main adjectives in another post (if we have forgotten some that you are thinking of, forgive us) in order to describe a thing, it is time to color them and keep explaining characteristics of that specific thing. It is time to see colors of course:
Once we have it all explained, let’s see the most common colors to describe their characteristics a bit. ore :

♣ Note:
- VERDE, ends with vowel E, therefore the gender remains the same for masculine/feminine.
- GRIS, even though the word ends with vowel S, the gender remains the same for masculine/feminine.
- LILA, even though the word ends with vowel A, the gender remains the same for masculine/feminine.
- AZUL, even though the word ends with vowel L, the gender remains the same for masculine/feminine.
- NARANJA, even though the word ends with vowel A, the gender remains the same for masculine/feminine.
- MARRÓN, even though the word ends with vowel N, the gender remains the same for masculine/feminine.
So, we have the items already to color our things:
¿CÓMO ES TU CLASE?
HOW IS YOUR CLASSROOM?
- LA CLASE ES BLANCA Y NEGRA
- THE CLASS IS WHITE AND BLACK
♣ Note:
- BLANCA is a feminine/singular adjective because it refers to CLASE, which is a feminine/singular noun. CLASE (feminine/singular Noun) ⇒ BLANCA (feminine/singular adjective).
- NEGRA is a feminine/singular adjective because it refers to CLASE, which is a feminine/singular noun. CLASE (feminine/singular Noun) ⇒ NEGRA (feminine/singular adjective).
Let’s see one more example but using the noun in a plural form:
¿CÓMO SON TUS LIBROS?
HOW ARE YOUR BOOKS?
- LOS LIBROS SON AZULES Y MARRONES
- THE BOOKS ARE BLUE AND BROWN
♣ Note:
- LIBROS is a masculine/plural noun, therefore, the determinant article will be masculine/plural LOS. LOS (masculine/plural Article) ⇒ LIBROS (masculine/plural noun).
- SON; as libros is a 3rd thing and plural (we have many), the verb will also be 3rd person/plural of SER: SON.
- AZULES is a masculine/plural adjective because it refers to LIBROS, which is a masculine/plural noun. LIBROS (masculine/plural noun) ⇒ AZULES (masculine/plural adjective). ◊ Remember that we make the plural of a word ended with a consonant, adding ES.
- MARRONES is a masculine/plural adjective because it refers to LIBROS, which is a masculine/plural noun. LIBROS (masculine/plural noun) ⇒ MARRONES (masculine/plural adjective). ◊ Remember that we make the plural of a word ended with a consonant, adding ES.
♦ MARRONES does not have an accent mark as MARRÓN has it because the adjective has become plural and the orthography rule changes. MARRÓN ⇒ MARRONES.
Giving the color to the noun colour
We have seen the colors giving a characteristic to the thing we were describing. Now, we are going to color as a noun as well, but, in that case it will not be the thing we are describing; it will be the color itself as a part of our new describing sentence. Seems too complicated explained in words so let’s write it down and see how easy it is:
¿CÓMO ES TU CLASE?
HOW IS YOUR CLASSROOM?
- LA CLASE ES DE COLOR BLANCO Y NEGRO
- THE CLASS IS OF COLOR WHITE AND BLACK
♣ Note:
- DE; as we already know, is the preposition FROM and, also in depends on the context is the preposition OF. This preposition is used to express type. In this sentence, the type of color.
- COLOR, is a masculine noun as we well know, and singular in this case.
- BLANCO is a masculine/singular adjective because it refers to COLOR (NOT TO CLASE), which is a masculine/singular noun. COLOR (masculine/singular Noun) ⇒ BLANCO (masculine/singular adjective).
- NEGRO is a masculine/singular adjective because refers to COLOR (NOT TO CLASE) which is a masculine/singular noun. COLOR(masculine/singular Noun) ⇒ NEGRO (masculine/singular adjective).
♦ REMEMBER! In this sentence the adjective refers to COLOR, not to CLASE, that’s why the Adjectives BLANCO/NEGRO are singular/masculine!!!!
Let’s see one more example but using the noun in a plural form:
¿CÓMO SON TUS LIBROS?
HOW ARE YOUR BOOKS?
- LOS LIBROS SON DE COLOR AZUL Y MARRÓN
- THE BOOKS ARE OF COLOR BLUE AND BROWN
- DE; as we already know is the preposition FROM, and, also in depends on the context, is the preposition OF. This preposition is used to express type. In this sentence, the type of color.
- AZUL is a masculine/singular adjective because it refers to COLOR (NOT TO CLASE), which is a masculine/singular noun. COLOR (masculine/singular Noun) ⇒ AZUL (masculine/singular adjective).
- MARRÓN is a masculine/singular adjective because it refers to COLOR (NOT TO CLASE), which is a masculine/singular noun. COLOR (masculine/singular Noun) ⇒ MARRÓN (masculine/singular adjective).
♦ AGAIN REMEMBER ! In this sentence the adjective refers to COLOR, not to CLASE, that’s why the Adjectives AZUL/MARRÓN are singular/masculine!!!!
Let’s see now one example of the previous section and one of the same examples of this very section:
- First the previous one:
¿CÓMO SON TUS LIBROS?
HOW ARE YOUR BOOKS?
- LOS LIBROS SON AZULES Y MARRONES.
- THE BOOKS ARE BLUE AND BROWN
♦ AZULES Y MARRONES refer to LIBROS that ‘s why the adjectives are masculine/plural!
- And now the same one from this lesson:
¿CÓMO SON TUS LIBROS?
HOW ARE YOUR BOOKS?
- LOS LIBROS SON DE COLOR AZUL Y MARRÓN
- THE BOOKS ARE OF COLOR BLUE AND BROWN
♦ AZUL Y MARRÓN refers to COLOR, that’s why the adjectives are masculine/singular!
And one more, the same as the class color description written above:
¿CÓMO ES TU CLASE?
HOW IS YOUR CLASSROOM?
- LA CLASE ES BLANCA Y NEGRA
- THE CLASS IS WHITE AND BLACK
♦ BLANCA Y NEGRA refers to CLASE (feminine/singular noun), that’s why the adjectives are feminine/singular!
¿CÓMO ES TU CLASE?
HOW IS YOUR CLASSROOM?
- LA CLASE ES DE COLOR BLANCO Y NEGRO
- THE CLASS IS OF COLOR WHITE AND BLACK
♦ BLANCO Y NEGRO refers to COLOR (masculine/singular noun), that’s why the adjectives are masculine/singular!
Giving an adjective to the thing Vs giving the adjective to the noun color
So, we have seen two ways of describing the color of a thing. Giving an adjective to the thing or giving the adjective to the noun color. However, the question made was the same for both answers, and, actually the question can be very specific in terms of asking just the color of the specific thing we are talking about. Let’s see it back:
1.
¿CÓMO ES TU CLASE?
HOW IS YOUR CLASSROOM?
- LA CLASE ES BLANCA Y NEGRA
- THE CLASS IS WHITE AND BLACK
2.
¿CÓMO ES TU CLASE?
HOW IS YOUR CLASSROOM?
- LA CLASE ES DE COLOR BLANCO Y NEGRO
- THE CLASS IS OF COLOR WHITE AND BLACK
◊ Cómo es tu clase? This question refers to your class in a description in general terms; the color of course is part of it, but, it is not specifically asking the type of color. If we want to do that, there is of course a way of doing it, and this is what we are going to see next:
¿DE QUÉ COLOR ES TU CLASE?
OF WHAT COLOR IS YOUR CLASSROOM?
♣ Note:
- DE; as we already know is the preposition FROM, and, also in depends on the context is the preposition OF. This preposition is used to express type. In this sentence, the type of color.
- COLOR, is a masculine noun as we well know, and singular in this case.
The answer will be the same:
- Giving an adjective to CLASE:
¿DE QUÉ COLOR ES TU CLASE?
OF WHAT COLOR IS YOUR CLASSROOM?
- LA CLASE ES BLANCA Y NEGRA
- THE CLASS IS WHITE AND BLACK
- Giving the adjective to COLOR:
¿DE QUÉ COLOR ES TU CLASE?
OF WHAT COLOR IS YOUR CLASSROOM?
- LA CLASE ES DE COLOR BLANCO Y NEGRO
- THE CLASS IS OF COLOR WHITE AND BLACK
