Indefinite adjectives in Spanish

Content

Before seeing the regular verbs in the indicative present tense, we are going to go through the indefinite adjectives. It is a very important part, because it will allow us to express things that are very often used in communication terms: someday, sometimes, everyday, somebody, everybody, so on…

Even though the use is easy and clear, gender (masculine/feminine) and form (singular/plural) included of course, we are going to be very careful in our explanation and go step by step and see it all slowly, because it can take you to an easy mistake.

As we had told previously, this vocabulary will be used all the way when using Spanish in our lives.

Here it comes then the first step of these indefinite adjectives; in the following lessons we are going to start using them:

SOME

MASCULINO

FEMENINO

SINGULAR

ALGUNO

ALGUNA

PLURAL

ALGUNOS

ALGUNAS

⊕ Plus:

SOME

MASCULINO

SINGULAR

ALGÚN

◊ We have not used them yet with a noun, so the table above, seems pretty useless yet. We want to remark those ALGUNO, ALGÚN because if you see, they are both the masculine and singular adjective pronouns. How is that possible?  The explanation it’s easier than the way it looks.

First of all, let’s use them with few random known (should be) nouns; Let’s pick -CASA-, -ESCUELAS-, -LIBROS- and -PADRE-, for instance:

  1. CASA → HOUSE

Now, let’s try to express SOME HOUSE :

◊ Firstly, think that CASA in this case, it is a feminine/singular noun, which will take us in the table above to ALGUNA:

ALGUNA CASASOME HOUSE

  1. ESCUELAS → SCHOOLS

Now, let’s try to express SOME SCHOOLS :

◊ Note that ESCUELAS in this case, it is a feminine/plural noun, which will take us in the table above to ALGUNAS:

ALGUNAS ESCUELASSOME SCHOOLS

  1. LIBROS → BOOKS

Now, let’s try to express SOME BOOKS:

◊ Note that BOOKS in this case, it is a masculine/plural noun, which will take us in the table above to ALGUNOS:

ALGUNOS BOOKS ⇒ SOME BOOKS

  1. PADRE → FATHER

Now, let’s try to express SOME FATHER :

◊ Note that FATHER in this case, it is a masculine/singular noun, which will take us in the table above to ALGUNO and/or ALGÚN???Eing???

ALGUNO PADRE – SOME FATHER???

Or:

⊕ ALGÚN PADRESOME FATHER???

♦ Which one is right? Are both correct? How does it work? We will explain it as clear as possible in the following post. See you in the next one!
