Time to use now the noun –COSA– with the indefinite adjective –SOME-, –EVERY– and –NONE– that in communication matters, we do use always; The noun as we’ve said is going to be THING, in its plural/singular mode – COSA, COSAS-:
ALGUNA COSA
SOME THING
◊ Note that in this case, we are seeing a singular/feminine noun, therefore, the indefinite adjective will be the feminine/singular –ALGUNA-.
ALGUNAS COSAS
SOME THINGS
◊ Note that in this case, we are seeing a plural/feminine noun, therefore, the indefinite adjective will be feminine/plural.
→ Again, you might wonder what is the difference between the singular mode SOME THING and the plural mode SOME THINGS.
Well, basically when it is singular –ALGUNA COSA– we are referring indeterminately to a small quantity of things, which means that you might refer to a one, two, three things… It can be that even more, but here we’re trying to express a small indeterminate quantity of things.
When it comes to plural –ALGUNAS COSAS-, we are referring indeterminately to a BIGGER quantity of things compared to -ALGUNA COSA-; How many? We do not know, that’s why we are using the indeterminate adjectives but for sure that is a bigger quantity of things than -ALGUNA COSA-.
Also, we can use a pronoun that expresses the same as the singular/feminine noun plus the indeterminate adjective –ALGUNA COSA-.
Remember that a pronoun is used to express a noun without having the need of using the noun itself:
ALGUNA COSA (SOME THING) |
ALGO (SOMETHING) |
The meaning of the pronoun ALGO and ALGUNA COSA are exactly the same, so it is up to decide which one you use in your communication.
◊ Note that pronouns do not have singular/plural nor masculine/feminine mode; It will remain without any change as ALGO in order to express SOMETHING.
Now is time to see the indefinite adjective –EVERY/ALL– using it with a noun -COSA- in its plural mode –COSAS-; We do use only its plural form here because already the expression goes to a plural idea:
TODAS LAS COSAS
ALL THE THINGS
(EVERYTHING)
◊ Note:
- TODAS, is a plural/feminine indeterminate adjective, as –THINGS– is a feminine/plural noun.
- LAS; in this expression, we do keep the specific article plural/masculine to -COSAS-
- TODAS LAS COSAS means exactly the same as –EVERYTHING-.
→ Remember that we do have another indeterminate adjective that remains the same in its masculine/feminine mode and it is used always in a singular form:
EACH |
CADA |
CADA COSA
EACH THING
◊ Note:
- CADA, is the indeterminate adjective EACH in English and it will come always along with a singular noun, even though expresses a big indeterminate quantity of things, it refers to a single thing; Also, as we have explained above, the gender remains without any change in its masculine/feminine mode.
Also, we can use a pronoun that expresses the same as the plural/feminine noun plus the indeterminate adjective -TODAS LAS COSAS-.
Remember that a pronoun is used to express a noun without having the need of using the noun itself:
TODAS LAS COSAS (ALL THE THING) CADA COSA (EACH THING) |
TODO (EVERYTHING) |
The meaning of the pronoun TODO and TODAS LAS COSAS/CADA COSA are exactly the same, so it is up to decide which one you use in your communication.
◊ Note that pronouns do not have singular/plural nor masculine/feminine mode; It will remain without any change as TODO in order to express EVERYTHING.
Now is time to see the indefinite adjective –NONE– using it with the noun –COSA– in its singular mode -COSA-.
Remember that these indefinite adjectives do not exist in English, so the word that is closer to it is -NONE-. Using them, we do express a lack of quantity of the thing we are referring to. Basically, we do express an absence of that specific noun; So, using them, we do communicate that there is no one thing –NOT A THING-.
NINGUNA COSA
NOT A THING
◊ Note that in this case, we are seeing a singular/feminine noun, therefore, the indefinite adjective will be the feminine/singular –NINGUNA-.
→ Remember that when we do express an absence of quantity we can’t make that idea plural, because 0 it can’t be in idea plural:
NINGUNAS COSAS (WRONG)
NOT A THINGS
Also, we can use a pronoun that expresses the same as the singular/feminine noun plus the indeterminate adjective –NINGUNA COSA-.
Remember that a pronoun is used to express a noun without having the need of using the noun itself:
NINGUNA COSA (NOT A THING) |
NADA (NOTHING) |
The meaning of the pronoun NADA and NINGUNA COSA are exactly the same, so it is up to decide which one you use in your communication.
◊ Note that pronouns do not have singular/plural nor masculine/feminine mode; –NADA– will remain without any change in order to express NOTHING.
→ So, remember the post overall:
-SOME plus NOUN- and PRONOUN |
-EVERY/ALL plus NOUN- and PRONOUN |
-NONE- plus NOUN- and PRONOUN |
ALGUNA COSA SOME THING ALGO (SOMETHING) |
TODAS LAS COSAS ALL THE THINGS TODO (EVERYTHING) |
NINGUNA COSA NOT A THING NADA (NOTHING) |
ALGUNAS COSAS SOME THINGS |
CADA COSA EACH THING TODO (EVERYTHING) |
→ In the next post, we are going to keep changing the noun: It is time to use –TIME– and mix it with these indeterminate adjectives, and in case, finding the pronouns or adverbs that go along with it; SOME TIMES, ALL THE TIME, NEVER…
