All the persons/all the world (everybody/everyone), all the people, every person and each person in Spanish

Content

In this very post we are going to see the indefinite adjective –EVERY/ALL– using it with a noun –PERSON– in its plural/singular mode – PERSONA/PERSONAS, WORLD –MUNDO– and PEOPLE –GENTE-.

Remember first the table of the indeterminate adjective EVERY/ALL:

EVERY/ALL

MASCULINO

FEMENINO

SINGULAR

TODO

TODA

PLURAL

TODOS

TODAS

→  As we are expressing a big indeterminate quantity, the mode of the word when using -PERSONA- will always be plural:PERSONAS-.

TODAS LAS PERSONAS

ALL THE PERSONS

(EVERYBODY)

◊ Note:

  1. TODAS, is a plural/feminine indeterminate adjective, as –PERSONAS– is a feminine/plural noun
  2. LAS, in this expression, we do keep the specific article plural/feminine to -PERSONAS-
  3. TODAS LAS PERSONAS means exactly the same as –EVERYBODY-.

→ Gente as a singular/feminine noun, even though it has a plural meaning itself, will use the singular/feminine indeterminate adjective as it happens with -SOME-.

TODA LA GENTE

ALL THE PEOPLE

◊ Note:

  1. TODA, is a singular/feminine indeterminate adjective, as –GENTE– is a feminine/singular noun, even though it has a plural meaning itself.
  2. LA, in this expression, we do keep the specific article singular/feminine to -GENTE-
  3. TODA LA GENTE means exactly the same as –ALL THE PEOPLE-.

→ Also we do have another indeterminate adjective that remains the same in its masculine/feminine mode and it is used always in a singular form:

EVERY/EACH

CADA

CADA PERSONA

EACH PERSON

◊ Note:

  1. CADA, is the indeterminate adjective EVERY/EACH in English and it will come always along with a singular noun, even though expresses a big indeterminate quantity of people, it refers to a single person; Also, as we have explained above, the gender remains without any change in its masculine/feminine mode.

→  The indeterminate adjective –CADAit is not correct to use it with -GENTE-; Even though it is a singular noun, it has a plural meaning that refers to a many persons, and the adjective indeterminate –CADA– even though gives a plural meaning at the end, refers to a singular noun:

CADA GENTE

EACH PEOPLE

INCORRECTO (WRONG)

We have another very common expression that means the same as well as is very used in communication terms as –TODAS LAS PERSONAS-:

TODO EL MUNDO

ALL THE WORLD

→ (EVERYONE)

Note:

  1. TODO, is a singular/masculine indeterminate adjective, as -MUNDO- is a masculine/singular noun.
  2. EL; this expression, uses as well the specific article singular/masculine to -MUNDO-
  3. TODO EL MUNDO means exactly the same asTODAS LAS PERSONAS-, which means in English – EVERYBODY-.

♦ Also, we can use a pronoun that expresses the same as –TODAS LAS PERSONAS-, -TODA LA GENTE- or -TODO EL MUNDO-.

Remember that a pronoun is used to express a noun without having the need of using the noun itself:

TODAS LAS PERSONAS

(EVERYBODY)

TODA LA GENTE

(ALL THE PEOPLE)

TODO EL MUNDO

(EVERYBODY)

TODOS (EVERYBODY)

The meaning of the pronoun TODOS and TODAS LAS PERSONAS, TODA LA GENTE, or TODO EL MUNDO, are exactly the same, so it is up to decide which one you use in your communication.

→ Note that pronouns do not have singular/plural nor masculine/feminine mode; It will remain without any change as TODOS in order to express EVERYBODY.

So, remember the post overall:

INDEFINITE ADJECTIVE plus ARTICLE plus NOUN

PRONOUN

TODAS       LAS         PERSONAS

ALL             THE        PERSONS

(EVERYBODY)

TODOS

EVERYBODY

EVERYONE

TODA       LA          GENTE

ALL          THE       PEOPLE

TODO       EL          MUNDO

ALL          THE        WORLD

(EVERYBODY

♥ In the next post we are going to keep seeing, of course, indeterminate adjectives but this time to express a lack of persons. See you in the next one!
