As you can already guess with the title of this post, we are going to express the location according to the cardinal points: North, South, East and West. First remember:
¿DÓNDE ESTÁ BARCELONA?
WHERE IS BARCELONA?
BARCELONA ESTÁ EN ESPAÑA
BARCELONA IS IN SPAIN
Now, let’s be a little bit more specific in its location according to the cardinal points:
INGLÉS |
ESPAÑOL |
TO THE NORTH OF |
AL NORTE DE |
TO THE SOUTH OF |
AL SUR DE |
TO THE EAST OF |
AL ESTE DE |
TO THE WEST OF |
AL OESTE DE |
TO THE NORTH EAST OF |
AL NORESTE DE |
TO THE NORTH WEST OF |
AL NOROESTE DE |
TO THE SOUTH EAST OF |
AL SURESTE DE |
TO THE SOUTH WEST OF |
AL SUROESTE DE |
IN THE CENTER OF |
EN EL CENTRO DE |
Then, once again:
¿DÓNDE ESTÁ BARCELONA?
WHERE IS BARCELONA?
BARCELONA ESTÁ AL SUR DE FRANCIA
BARCELONA IS TO THE SOUTH OF FRANCE
♣ Note:
- AL SUR; unlike English, in Spanish, we express direction when telling the cardinal points; that’s why we do use the preposition A(To). AL → A EL ⇒ TO THE.
- DE; as we already know, we do use the preposition OF in most of our location expressions to tell a reference point of the noun that we are giving the location of.
¿DÓNDE ESTÁ BARCELONA?
WHERE IS BARCELONA?
BARCELONA ESTÁ AL NORTE DE ESPAÑA
BARCELONA IS TO THE NORTH OF SPAIN
