¿Qué tiempo hace? Vs ¿Cómo es el tiempo? in Spanish

Content

We have already seen the most common expressions to express weather in other posts; our very own non-personal expressions with the verbs HACER, LLOVER and NEVAR, and, the use of the verb SER to describe the weather as we do in English. Those expressions can be interchanged among them, whether the question is made with verb HACER or with verb SER; let’s see it.

⇒ Asking with our Spanish expression:

¿QUÉ TIEMPO HACE EN BARCELONA?

WHAT WEATHER MAKES IN BARCELONA?

(How’s the weather like in Barcelona?)

⇒ Answering with the verb Ser:

EL TIEMPO ES SOLEADO

THE WEATHER IS SUNNY

Or:

⇒ Asking with the verb Ser:

¿CÓMO ES EL TIEMPO EN BARCELONA?

HOW IS THE WEATHER IN BARCELONA?

⇒ Answering with Spanish expression:

EN BARCELONA HACE SOL

IN BARCELONA MAKES SUN

(In Barcelona the weather is sunny)

Basically, what we are trying to explain to you is that no matter what expression –HACER or SER– the weather is asked or answered, both are completely fine.

You might wonder which one is better or more used; well, both expressions are just as fine. Probably if we had to give an answer to it, we would say that the non-personal expression with the verb HACER is probably more common, but actually,  we don’t really find any difference in it.

Of course you have to know both and use them properly when we are referring to weather, but, there is no preference for one of them.

◊ Remember that no matter on what expression –HACER or SER– the weather is asked or answered; both are completely fine.

How is the weather like and seasons in Spanish

We are already able to express the weather in two different formats; now, we are just going to mix them with the seasons that we had already learned in another post. Remember the seasons first:

MESES DEL AÑO

ESTACIONES DEL AÑO

SEASONS OF THE YEAR

ENERO

INVIERNO

WINTER

FEBRERO

MARZO

PRIMAVERA

SPRING

ABRIL

MAYO

JUNIO

VERANO

SUMMER

JULIO

AGOSTO

SETIEMBRE

OTOÑO

AUTUMN

OCTUBRE

NOVIEMBRE

DICIEMBRE

INVIERNO

WINTER

→  INVIERNO, PRIMAVERA, OTOÑO y VERANO.

Of course, in each country we are going to find a different type of climate, but we are going to see the seasons of the year taking as an example Barcelona and the difference of its weather within the seasons.

Remember, as we had seen in the previous section, the expressions -SER, HACER, LLOVER or NEVAR- can be mixed in their questions and their answers; no matter in which expression the question is asked and in what expression the answer is answered.

¿CÓMO ES EL TIEMPO EN INVIERNO?

HOW IS THE WEATHER IN WINTER?

EL TIEMPO EN INVIERNO ES FRÍO

THE WEATHER IN WINTER IS COLD

(How’s the weather like in spring?)
