Temporary and permanent adjectives to describe a thing in Spanish

Content

We have seen, in another post, permanent and temporary adjectives in order to describe the personal characteristics of somebody. Remember:

YO ESTOY  SIMPÁTICO ⇒ CORRECT

I      AM        NICE

(nice in a specific moment)

YO SOY SIMPÁTICO ⇒ CORRECT

I      AM  NICE

(A nice person permanently)

This temporary/permanent idea can also be used on things. Let’s use VIEJO (Old) per example:

LA CLASE ESTÁ VIEJA ⇒ CORRECT

THE CLASS  IS     OLD

(The class looks old)

LA  CLASE ES VIEJA ⇒ CORRECT

THE CLASS IS OLD

(An old class)

♣ Note:

  1. LA CLASE ESTÁ VIEJA; this is a temporary ESTAR expression, and as we said, tell us that the class looks old, but it does not mean that it is an old class. It can be or it cannot be, but it does look old.
  2. LA CLASE ES VIEJA; this is a permanent SER expression, and as we said, tell us that the class is an old class, and, this is a characteristic of the class.

Let’s see now in this very lesson temporary adjectives that mainly are going to be be used only in a temporary state:

Now, let’s see if the description of the color of a thing can be temporary and permanent. What do you think? I guess you already know that, of course is possible thinking of SER/ESTAR and their temporary/permanent idea:

¿CÓMO ES  TU CLASE?

HOW IS YOUR CLASSROOM?

LA  CLASE ESTÁ NEGRA ⇒ CORRECT

THE CLASS IS BLACK

(The class temporarily is black)

LA CLASE ES NEGRA ⇒ CORRECT

THE CLASS IS BLACK

(A black class)

♣ Note:

  1. LA CLASE ESTÁ NEGRA; this is a temporary ESTAR expression, and as we said, tell us that the class temporarily is black, but, it does not mean that it is a black class. May be the walls are super dirty, or, something has happened to the class, but, is temporarily black
  2. LA CLASE ES NEGRA; this is a permanent SER expression, and as we said, tell us that the class is a black class, and, this is a characteristic of the class.

◊ Materials (glass, metal, plastic…), won’t be used in a temporary idea:

¿CÓMO ES  TU CLASE?

HOW IS YOUR CLASSROOM?

LA CLASE ESTÁ DE MADERA ⇒ INCORRECT

THE CLASS IS OF WOOD

LA CLASE ES DE MADERA ⇒ CORRECT

THE CLASS IS OF WOOD

(A wooden class)

♣ Note:

  1. LA CLASE ESTÁ DE MADERA; this temporary ESTAR expression in material cannot be used. We do not really think that the material that a thing is made out of , can be switched temporarily. Eventually, you can change the material of a thing, but then, it will already be a new characteristic of it, so, it will not be temporary.
  2. LA CLASE ES DE MADERA; this is a permanent SER expression, and, as we said, tell us that the class is a wooden class, and, this is a characteristic of the class.

Quantifying the temporal or permanent adjective

Once we have seen adjectives already, the description becomes very easy. Also, as we had explained in other posts, we can use some adverbs to quantify the adjective. In other words, to give to the adjective a more clear idea of its expression (very, a little bit, quite). Is better we see some examples to clarify the explanation.

Adverbs that quantify an adjective:

VERY

MUY

A LITTLE BIT

UN POCO

QUITE

BASTANTE

 First remember the previous lessons:

¿CÓMO ES TU CLASE?

HOW IS YOUR CLASS?

  • MI CLASE ES GRANDE
  • MY CLASS IS BIG

  • MI CLASE ESTÁ SUCIA
  • MY CLASS IS DIRTY

Let’s use the adverbs in the sentence then:

¿CÓMO ES TU CLASE?

HOW IS YOUR CLASS?

VERY:

    • MI CLASE ES MUY GRANDE
    • MY CLASS IS VERY BIG

               (Permanent)

    • MI CLASE ESTÁ MUY SUCIA
    • MY CLASS IS VERY DIRTY

                (Temporary)

QUITE:

    • MI CLASE ES BASTANTE GRANDE
    • MY CLASS IS QUITE BIG

               (Permanent)

    • MI CLASE ESTÁ BASTANTE SUCIA
    • MY CLASS IS QUITE DIRTY

                (Temporary)

A LITTLE BIT:

    • MI CLASE ES UN POCO GRANDE
    • MY CLASS IS A LITTLE BIT BIG

               (Permanent)

    • MI CLASE ESTÁ UN POCO SUCIA
    • MY CLASS IS A LITTLE BIT DIRTY

                (Temporary)
